In the ESL (English as a Second Language) classroom, teaching students about suffixes can be a powerful tool for enhancing their understanding of English vocabulary, grammar, and word formation. In this post we hope to introduce the most common suffixes used in English and a downloadable worksheet to practice the knowledge you get through the post. What are Suffixes?

A suffix is a set of letters that is added to the end of a base or root word. By changing or adding these suffixes, new words can be formed with different meanings or grammatical functions. For example, when you add the suffix “-er” to the verb “teach,” you get the noun “teacher.” This changes the word from an action (verb) into a person (noun) performing that action.

Understanding suffixes is vital for ESL students because they help determine not just the meaning of words but also the grammatical structure, such as whether the word is a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.
